Old Town Elementary School PTA Scholarship

The Susan Symes Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Susan Symes who, in November 1996, died tragically less than a week after her daughter Sarah was born. Susan was just 32 years old.

Susan Symes was an elementary education graduate of Texas A&M University and began teaching third grade. She started teaching at Old Town Elementary in 1988, the year it opened. Susan taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grades there. Some students were fortunate enough to have her for all three grades.

Susan found teaching to be a very rewarding profession. She worked very hard at being the best teacher she could be and made learning fun and interesting for her students. She loved watching children grow through the knowledge they gained. She was a very avid reader and enjoyed sharing this with her students. Susan loved her students and when she took trips, she would bring each student a souvenir. Susan also loved crafts and made angels and many other crafts for the staff craft fair. She was an amazing cook and often brought homemade cookies to her students. Susan was married in June after her first year of teaching and her whole class attended the wedding.

Old Town Elementary PTA and Mr. & Mrs. Bob Shormann (parents of Susan Symes) are offering two $500 Susan Symes Memorial Scholarships—one for academic merit and one for financial need to a former student of Old Town Elementary.

Awarding of the Susan Symes Memorial Scholarship is contingent on several criteria including acceptance to and enrollment in a two- or four-year college, and a complete application. Additionally, applicants are required to submit an essay, about their favorite
book, and the impact it has had on them.
